Why is hypnotherapy
so effective?
You have arrived
at where you are in life and how you think and feel about situations
because of the input into your mind from the moment you were born. Your
own mind has created the particular situation or problem you may be
experiencing at this point in time.
The human mind is
extremely powerful, and significantly underrated part of our make-up
and can also be instrumental in change and shaping your future to how
you would like to view, feel and approach it. There are two parts to
our human mind, one is the conscious element and the other the unconscious.
The power of the unconscious element has largely helped to shape the
situation or problem you may have now, the unconscious part is designed
to help and protect us. As an example in physical terms is that we don't
have to consciously think and instruct ourselves to breathe, or consciously
instruct our heart to continue beating; when we get hot our body automatically
perspires to cool ourselves down. As in the physical sense it also extends
to helping and protecting us in the way we feel, our habits and emotions.
The unconscious is non-judgemental in all things and does not recognise
what is real or imagined; automatic reactions that we have towards fear
or danger come from the 'stored' experiences (real or imagined - inappropriate
or appropriate) ; very much like data on a computer. Our conscious mind
normally has little control over the database of our unconscious mind,
although consciously you may want to quit smoking your unconscious feels
it is an acceptable habit because it has been 'conditioned' that way.
As far as your inner, unconscious mind is concerned , all your habits,
cravings or anxieties are acceptable and assumed to be in your best
interests. As I said earlier it is non-judgemental and will accept what
you present to it as it is without reasoning. Like a computer, it has
been programmed by you to act and react in certain ways. The critical
element of hypnotherapy is that the unconscious power that has created
your situation or problem can also be utilised to work for us rather
than against us; hypnotherapy directly engages the unconscious, re-programming
the inner, unconscious mind by communicating in a relaxed agreeable
way to effect change.
The Conscious
and Unconscious Mind
The conscious mind
is the part of the mind that we have control over, and although may
be considered initially to be the essential part of the way we react
and do things upon investigation we find that it is the unconscious
part of our mind that is much larger and more powerful. How many times
do we see or experience what we would term irrational fears or behaviour
being displayed by ourselves or others around us? In many instances
this can do us harm and also make us feel 'irrationally' depressed or
lacking confidence, in extreme cases it can cause physical harm. The
unconscious has been conditioned or programmed to believe that this
is the natural reaction we should have and odd as it sounds believes
this behaviour is in our best interests. This incorrect programming
is swiftly changed by the application of hypnotherapy and the immense
power of the unconscious mind is applied to work with rather than against
you.
An example of the inter-action between the conscious and unconscious
is I had a particular client that was afraid of feathers. The client
consciously knew and admitted that the feathers were harmless but the
client's unconscious, or inner mind, had been programmed to produce
this irrational fear, the more powerful unconscious was overriding the
thinking, conscious mind.
Hypnotherapy creates
a form of deep relaxation of the mind in which there is a linking that
subtly occurs with the unconscious mind, allowing access to the inner
resources within. Beneficial suggestions and other skilful applications
of achieving positive change are then allowed to be employed, to bring
about the changes you want.
Investigation of
the problem, both on a conscious and unconscious level through hypnotherapy
with you results in working with the inherent cause as well as the presenting
symptom. Many clients I have achieved resounding therapeutic success
with had suffered particular problems for many years turning to hypnotherapy
as the last resort. There is no need to suffer or continue to live with
a distressing or debilitating problem, hypnotherapy allows you to get
back the control over your own circumstances and be in control of your
own mind.
Your mind and body operate as one. What affects the one will affect
the other. The power of the mind means that it can have significant
influence over our physical part; which means that hypnotherapy can
be effective for what we would normally see as purely physical disorders
such as migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, skin disorders or chronic
pain.
My personal approach to therapy
Having studied with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis and as a member of the General Hypnotherapy Register (One of the largest hypnotherapy bodies in the UK),
I am not subject to having to practise any one particular
method. I do keep up to date with all the latest developments in the
field, and utilise the most proven, effective, tried and tested methods
of the past. Without elaborating too much on the different forms of
therapy, I tend to take a holistic approach and 'individualise' therapy
to the client. I may have two different clients with the same presenting
problem but apply two different approaches. The reason for this is,
as my previous clients will confirm, I believe in working as quickly
and as effectively as possible for my clients, rather than convincing
them they will have to return week after week. Expectation of the client
is discussed from the outset so both the client and myself have clear
objectives to achieve in our time spent together. All my clients are
treated with the utmost respect and understanding, all matters are dealt
with in total confidence and in a very professional and comfortable
way.
"Throughout
my experience of hypnotherapy both as a recipient and as a therapist,
I have grown to understand that within each and every one of us are
the necessary resources and potential for transformation. It is the
power of authentic influential communication, together with treating
the individual as a whole that can access these resources and effect
profound change."
